Is VIPKID Legit?
Is VIPKID legit? Is VIPKID a scam? These are common topics found online when doing your homework on VIPKID.
Yes, it’s true. You can make money from home teaching a language you’ve been speaking your whole life. Even if you’re not a school teacher or don’t have any teaching credentials, you could still be qualified to teach English with VIPKID. Naturally, experience teaching in a classroom with kids will improve your odds, but it’s no longer a requirement. Check out my page on VIPKID requirements to see a list of current requirements. They have also recently changed their hiring process. In fact, this new process just went into effect August 2018. I discuss the changes in the process and why it’s a better system in another page, the VIPKID interview process.
Right now, I want to discuss how VIPKID has changed many of their policies since they first started. I’ve found a lot of information online about VIPKID that is either misleading or completely inaccurate. So as a current teacher with VIPKID, I would like to set the record straight and answer the question: is VIPKID legit?
How It Began
VIPKID was founded in 2013 by Cindy Mi. She has been teaching most of her life. However, she has been a student for all of her life. Growing up in the barren province of Hebei, China, she spent her lunch money buying audio-cassettes and magazines to teach herself English. Around the age of 15, she began tutoring English to other students. She also worked for a local language school where she held after school tutoring sessions for younger Chinese students. This led to her becoming part of the language school’s leadership and expansion team.
These early experiences later inspired her to create VIPKID. She developed a platform that could best serve language learners and educators worlds apart. It successfully brings qualified educators into the homes of children who otherwise would not have access to this level of education. Teaching herself English made her aware of the difficulties in learning a language independently. Spending what little money she had to educate herself also made her aware of the rising costs of education. VIPKID strives to eliminate these obstacles. You can hear the passion she has for education when she talks about the future of VIPKID.
Partners & Promoters
As of today, VIPKID has raised $825 million in total known funds according to TechCrunch. This growth is incredible when you realize that only a year ago, August 2017, they had raised about $200 million. While VIPKID is leading the charge with the majority of the market share, the entire online education industry is exploding. A year ago, VIPKID included about 200,000 students and 20,000 teachers. As of today, they boast over 600,000 students and over 60,000 teachers. This is only after five years of being established. They will continue to grow. Especially with a recent announcement made about intentions to expand into 100 countries (currently in 35.) One of their better recognized investors, Kobe Bryant, discusses why VIPKID has so much potential in its future.
Other notable investors include Innovation Works, Learn Capital, Sequoia Capital, Tencent, Coatue Management, Matrix Partners, and Northern Light Venture. Last year, Forbes wrote an article ranking the top 100 home-based job. VIPKID ranked #5 on the list.
As you can tell, VIPKID has a lot of support. It has a bright future and this is still an early stage in its growth. Now is the best time to join this opportunity. Early enough to grow with the company, but after enough time that most of the kinks have been fixed. So, my response to the quesiton, Is VIPKID legit?
Yes, it’s too legit to quit.
